Guides for dog owners

Practical, sourced guides for everyday dog care — written to be useful whether or not you ever buy from us. Anything that sounds like a health problem is a conversation for your vet.

Giving supplements

How to give a dog a tablet (without the struggle)Hide the tablet in a small piece of soft, tasty food if its instructions allow; if not, place it at the back of your dog’s tongue, hold their mouth closed gently and stroke their throat. Always check the label or your vet’s instructions first, because some tablets must be given whole or on an empty stomach.

Understanding labels and ingredients

Probiotics vs prebiotics for dogs: what’s the difference?A probiotic is a live micro-organism; a prebiotic is a substance, such as inulin or FOS, that micro-organisms already living in the gut selectively use. A product containing both is sometimes called a synbiotic — though that word, too, has a precise scientific meaning.
How to read a dog supplement label (UK feed labelling explained)A dog supplement sold as complementary feed carries a label that follows UK animal feed law: a type of feed, a composition list, additives, analytical constituents, feeding instructions, a best-before date and a batch number. Feed labels may describe nutrition and support, but disease claims are reserved for authorised veterinary medicines.
What CFU means on a dog supplement (and what it doesn’t)CFU stands for colony-forming units — a laboratory estimate of how many live bacteria in a product can multiply and form colonies. It tells you roughly how many live cells there are, but not which strains they are, whether they suit your dog, or how many remain after poor storage.

Routine and everyday care

How to switch your dog’s food gradually (a 7–10 day plan)Mix the new food in gradually over about a week — Blue Cross suggests 25% new on days one and two, 50% on days three and four, 75% on days five and six and 100% on day seven — and take longer if your dog’s tummy needs it. Change one thing at a time, so start any new supplement separately.
Travelling with your dog: keeping their routine on trackKeep your dog’s food, mealtimes, walks and bedtime as close to normal as you can, feed them no sooner than about two hours before a car journey, stop regularly for water and a toilet break, and never leave them — or their supplements — in a parked car on a warm day.
How to store dog supplements (and keep live cultures live)Store dog supplements in their original bottle with the lid closed, somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight and well out of reach of children and pets. For products with live cultures, moisture and heat are the main things to avoid.
Dosing supplements in a multi-dog householdDose each dog by their own current weight — never split one dog’s amount across the pack — and feed them apart so every dog gets exactly their share. A simple chart and one person in charge keep the routine on track.
How to weigh your dog at home (and why it matters)For a dog you can lift safely, weigh yourself on bathroom scales, then weigh yourself again holding your dog — the difference is your dog’s weight. For larger dogs, ask your vet practice whether you can use their scales.
How often should you feed a dog? Building a daily feeding routineMost adult dogs should be fed twice a day, with their daily allowance split into two meals; puppies need smaller, more frequent meals — usually four a day when they first come home, dropping to two by around six months.

Health and safety

When to see a vet about your dog’s digestionCall your vet straight away if your dog keeps retching without bringing anything up, has a swollen belly, blood in their vomit, may have swallowed something harmful, or has collapsed. Diarrhoea lasting more than 24 hours, a dog that seems unwell, weight loss or a change in appetite all mean contacting your vet for advice.
Puppies and supplements: what to know before you startMost puppies don’t need a supplement: a food labelled ‘complete’ for puppies or growth is designed to provide all the nutrients they need. If you are considering adding anything, speak to your vet first — and note that DIGEST+ is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks.
