Dobermann: weight, routine and daily dose
The largest of the Pinschers takes its name from Louis Dobermann, a tax collector in Apolda, Germany, who wanted a fierce-looking dog to protect him on his rounds and deter would-be robbers. To a Pinscher foundation he added Weimaraner, Greyhound, Manchester Terrier, Rottweiler and German Shepherd blood for intelligence, speed and toughness, and by the late 19th century he had the squarely built, clean-lined dog he wanted. The German Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1899.
The breed standard describes a dog that is intelligent and firm of character, loyal and obedient, bold and alert. Its trainability has been put to use by the armed forces and police, yet the Royal Kennel Club says it is equally comfortable as a family dog. With more than two hours of exercise recommended each day — and as a large, deep-chested breed — a Dobermann’s routine works best with exercise kept well apart from meals.

Feeding-routine notes for Dobermann owners
- Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center lists Doberman Pinschers among the large, deep-chested breeds in which GDV (bloat) is far more common, and suggests two or more meals a day, limiting activity after meals and avoiding raised food bowls.
- PDSA similarly advises avoiding exercise or car travel around mealtimes, and slowing down a dog that gulps its food.
- A typical range of about 27–45.5 kg spans the 26–40 kg and over 40 kg bands, so weigh your dog and check the dose calculator.
- A sudden swollen belly or retching without bringing anything up is an emergency: contact your vet immediately. For other digestive changes, see when to see a vet.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Dobermann: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Dobermann have a day?
Typical adult Dobermanns weigh 27–45.5 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day; Over 40 kg: 4 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Dobermann?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days; At 4 tablets/day one bottle lasts 30 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
If I split my Dobermann’s food into two meals, when should the supplement go in?
With either meal — pick the one that is most regular and stick to it. Splitting food into two or more meals and limiting activity afterwards is advice Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center gives for large, deep-chested dogs.
Should a Dobermann eat from a raised bowl?
Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center and PDSA both advise against raised bowls for large, deep-chested dogs and suggest feeding from the floor. Contact your vet straight away if your dog ever has a swollen belly or retches without producing anything.
Can every Dobermann have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Dobermann is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
