German Shepherd Dog: weight, routine and daily dose
Max von Stephanitz and his followers developed and promoted the German Shepherd first as a herding dog and then as a working dog for the police and armed forces. From the First World War onwards its bravery and temperament won it worldwide recognition, and the Royal Kennel Club notes it has proved itself as a guide dog for the blind, a tracking dog and in obedience. The long-haired variety, once frowned upon in Germany, is now recognised in the breed standard.
The standard describes a versatile working dog — attentive, alert, resilient and tireless, with keen scenting ability — and a temperament that is steady of nerve, loyal, self-assured, courageous and tractable. With more than two hours of exercise a day recommended, a Shepherd’s day is full; as a large, deep-chested breed, it also benefits from a routine that keeps vigorous exercise well away from mealtimes.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a German Shepherd Dog need?
A typical adult German Shepherd Dog weighs 22.5–41 kg, which crosses 3 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
| 25–40 kg | 3 tablets/day | 40 days | Every 4 weeks |
| Over 40 kg | 4 tablets/day | 30 days | Every 4 weeks — a bottle lasts 30 days, so consider 2 per delivery |
The bottle label prints 25 kg in two rows (11–25 kg and 25–40 kg). We use the 11–25 kg row at exactly 25 kg; if your dog is heavier than 25 kg, use the 25–40 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for German Shepherd Dog owners
- PDSA names German Shepherds among the large, deep-chested breeds most at risk of GDV (bloat), and advises avoiding exercise or car travel around mealtimes.
- PDSA also suggests several smaller meals through the day rather than one big one, slowing down a dog that gulps its food, and feeding from the floor rather than a raised bowl.
- Adult Shepherds can range from about 22.5 kg to over 40 kg, so they span several bands — weigh your dog and check the dose calculator.
- A sudden swollen belly or retching without bringing anything up is an emergency: contact your vet immediately. For other digestive changes, see when to see a vet.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

German Shepherd Dog: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a German Shepherd Dog have a day?
Typical adult German Shepherd Dogs weigh 22.5–41 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day; 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day; Over 40 kg: 4 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a German Shepherd Dog?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days; At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days; At 4 tablets/day one bottle lasts 30 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
When should I give a German Shepherd’s supplement if I split meals?
With either meal — choose the one that is most regular in your household and stick to it. Splitting the day’s food into smaller meals and keeping vigorous exercise away from mealtimes is advice PDSA gives for large, deep-chested dogs.
Is a chewable tablet easy for a German Shepherd to take?
Most large dogs take a chewable tablet from the hand or in the bowl without fuss. If yours gulps food, crushing the tablet into a small portion first helps you see it has been eaten. Contact your vet straight away if your dog ever has a swollen belly or retches without producing anything.
Can every German Shepherd Dog have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your German Shepherd Dog is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
