Golden Retriever: weight, routine and daily dose
The Golden Retriever has a precise birthplace. The first Lord Tweedmouth is credited with founding the breed by crossing a yellow dog from black Wavy Coated Retrievers with a Tweed Water Spaniel, a mating that produced four yellow puppies; the Bloodhound and the Irish Setter were added later. The Kennel Club recognised the “yellow or golden” Retriever in 1913, the name Golden Retriever was settled in 1920, and the Guisachan estate is still revered by enthusiasts as the home of the breed.
The breed standard describes a biddable, intelligent dog with natural working ability and a kindly, friendly, confident temperament. The Royal Kennel Club lists more than two hours of exercise a day and grooming more than once a week, so a Golden’s day is a full one — long walks, retrieving games, a brush — and steady mealtimes give that busy schedule its structure.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a Golden Retriever need?
A typical adult Golden Retriever weighs 24.5–34.5 kg, which crosses 2 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
| 25–40 kg | 3 tablets/day | 40 days | Every 4 weeks |
The bottle label prints 25 kg in two rows (11–25 kg and 25–40 kg). We use the 11–25 kg row at exactly 25 kg; if your dog is heavier than 25 kg, use the 25–40 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for Golden Retriever owners
- Goldens span roughly 24.5–34.5 kg, which crosses the 11–25 kg and 26–40 kg bands. Weigh your dog rather than assuming, then check the band in the dose calculator.
- With two or more hours of activity a day, many owners split food into two meals; a daily supplement can go with whichever meal is most reliable.
- Pair the supplement with an existing habit — the post-walk breakfast, for example — so it is not forgotten on busy days.
- Keep food changes gradual and speak to your vet about any vomiting, diarrhoea or change in appetite.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Golden Retriever: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Golden Retriever have a day?
Typical adult Golden Retrievers weigh 24.5–34.5 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day; 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Golden Retriever?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days; At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Can I hide a Golden Retriever’s tablet in food?
Yes. A chewable tablet can be given from the hand or crushed into the usual meal. Mixing it into a small portion first, then adding the rest of the food once it has gone, makes it easy to see that it has been eaten.
Does a very active Golden need a different supplement routine on long-walk days?
No — consistency matters more than timing, so give it at the same meal each day. On long, active days make sure fresh water is always available. If you think your dog needs more or less food for its activity level, your vet can help you set portions.
Can every Golden Retriever have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Golden Retriever is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
