Weimaraner: weight, routine and daily dose
The silver-grey coat has earned the Weimaraner the name ‘Grey Ghost’. The Royal Kennel Club notes that the breed was created at the German court of Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar as a pointing dog for the nobility in the early 19th century, and that a strictly run club kept it exclusive to the elite. It became better known outside Germany only around the Second World War and was first seen in the UK in the 1950s; a less numerous long-haired variety also exists.
The breed standard presents a picture of power, stamina and balance, with hunting ability of paramount concern, and a temperament that is fearless, friendly, protective, obedient and alert. The RKC suggests more than two hours of exercise a day, and Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center names Weimaraners among the large, deep-chested breeds in which bloat (GDV) is far more common — so how meals and exercise fit together matters for this breed.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a Weimaraner need?
A typical adult Weimaraner weighs 24.5–41 kg, which crosses 3 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
| 25–40 kg | 3 tablets/day | 40 days | Every 4 weeks |
| Over 40 kg | 4 tablets/day | 30 days | Every 4 weeks — a bottle lasts 30 days, so consider 2 per delivery |
The bottle label prints 25 kg in two rows (11–25 kg and 25–40 kg). We use the 11–25 kg row at exactly 25 kg; if your dog is heavier than 25 kg, use the 25–40 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for Weimaraner owners
- Cornell’s feeding suggestions for at-risk breeds include two or more meals a day and limiting activity after meals.
- Plan the long daily run so it does not sit right next to a meal; the PDSA advises avoiding exercise around mealtimes for large, deep-chested dogs.
- Feed from a bowl on the floor rather than a raised stand — both the PDSA and Cornell advise against raised bowls.
- If your Weimaraner eats fast, the PDSA suggests a slow-feeding bowl.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Weimaraner: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Weimaraner have a day?
Typical adult Weimaraners weigh 24.5–41 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day; 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day; Over 40 kg: 4 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Weimaraner?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days; At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days; At 4 tablets/day one bottle lasts 30 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Is the Weimaraner at risk of bloat?
Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center names Weimaraners among the large, deep-chested breeds in which GDV, or bloat, is far more common. It is an emergency: if your dog’s belly swells or they retch without bringing anything up, call your vet immediately. Smaller, more frequent meals and calm time after eating are among the feeding suggestions from Cornell and the PDSA.
Can I give the tablet before a long run?
It is better given with a meal, and for a deep-chested dog meals are best kept away from vigorous exercise. Give the tablet with the meal once your dog has settled, eaten directly or crushed into food.
Can every Weimaraner have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Weimaraner is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
