Bernese Mountain Dog: weight, routine and daily dose
The Bernese Mountain Dog takes its name from the Swiss canton of Berne, where it was developed as a draught dog pulling carts for the area’s weavers. The Royal Kennel Club notes it also worked as a general farm dog, herding sheep and cattle and pulling milk and cheese carts, and it is one of four Swiss mountain dogs that share the rich black, tan and white colouring.
The breed standard describes a strong, sturdy, multi-purpose farm dog and a kind, devoted family dog — self-confident, good-natured and friendly — that is slow to mature. Up to an hour’s exercise a day is the RKC’s guide, so a Bernese’s routine is less about distance than about steady, regular walks and well-timed meals for a big dog.

Feeding-routine notes for Bernese Mountain Dog owners
- The standard describes the Bernese as slow to mature, so a young dog’s weight can keep changing for some time; weigh regularly and check which band of the feeding guide applies.
- A Bernese can range from about 32 kg to over 50 kg depending on sex and build, which spans more than one band of the feeding guide — the breed name alone does not tell you the band.
- Split the daily food into two meals and keep walks and play apart from mealtimes.
- A heavy coat can make weight changes hard to see; feel along the ribs and use the scales.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Bernese Mountain Dog: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Bernese Mountain Dog have a day?
Typical adult Bernese Mountain Dogs weigh 31.5–52.5 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day; Over 40 kg: 4 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Bernese Mountain Dog?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days; At 4 tablets/day one bottle lasts 30 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
My Bernese is still filling out. Which weight should I use?
Use your dog’s current weight on the day you weigh them, and weigh again as they fill out, since the breed standard notes the Bernese is slow to mature. DIGEST+ is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. Your vet can advise on healthy growth for your dog.
How do I weigh a dog as big as a Bernese?
Bathroom scales are rarely practical for a large dog. Many vet practices have walk-on scales, so ask yours whether you can use them. Weighing every few months keeps the feeding guide accurate.
Can every Bernese Mountain Dog have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Bernese Mountain Dog is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
