Dogue de Bordeaux: weight, routine and daily dose
Once known as the French Mastiff, the Dogue de Bordeaux probably existed in France as far back as the 14th century, the Royal Kennel Club notes, working as a guard dog on vineyards and farms and also used for hunting and haulage. Its first breed standard was written in 1910; it was recorded in the UK as early as 1897 but disappeared for much of the 20th century, and the Kennel Club awarded it championship status in 2016.
The breed standard describes a powerful, stocky, athletic and imposing dog with natural guarding instincts — vigilant and courageous without aggression, a good companion and very affectionate. It sets minimum weights rather than a range: at least 45 kg for bitches and 50 kg for dogs, so individual adults may weigh more. With up to an hour’s exercise a day suggested, the routine centres on steady walks and well-spaced meals for a very big dog.

Feeding-routine notes for Dogue de Bordeaux owners
- Every adult that meets the standard’s minimum weights is over 40 kg, so all sit in the top band of the feeding guide.
- Split the daily food into two measured meals, and keep vigorous exercise and car journeys away from mealtimes, as the PDSA advises for large and giant dogs.
- Feed from a bowl on the floor rather than a raised stand; the PDSA notes raised bowls have been shown to increase the risk of GDV.
- With up to an hour’s exercise a day suggested, it is easy to set walks at fixed times that sit apart from meals.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Can every Dogue de Bordeaux have DIGEST+?
