Newfoundland: weight, routine and daily dose
If any dog deserves the working label, the Royal Kennel Club says, it is the Newfoundland. Developed in north-east Canada, the breed has towed fishermen’s carts, pulled logs from the forest for lumberjacks, hauled in fishermen’s nets and jumped from boats to retrieve lost equipment — and, more recently, jumped from low-flying planes and helicopters to rescue swimmers in distress.
Its ancestors are thought to have reached Newfoundland with fishermen from Europe, and were selectively bred for well-sprung ribs, an oily waterproof coat and webbed feet for water work. Today the RKC describes the Newfoundland as a gentle, patient and loyal family companion that needs up to an hour of exercise a day. With average weights of 50–69 kg in the breed standard, everything in a Newfoundland’s routine comes in larger quantities — including the number of tablets in the feeding guide.

Feeding-routine notes for Newfoundland owners
- An adult Newfoundland sits in the top band of the feeding guide, which means more tablets each day than a smaller dog. Crushing them into the meal can be simpler than giving several whole.
- The PDSA advises feeding several smaller meals rather than one big one, and feeding from the floor rather than from a raised bowl.
- Bathroom scales are impractical for a dog this size. Ask your vet practice whether you can use their walk-on scales between appointments.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Newfoundland: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Newfoundland have a day?
Typical adult Newfoundlands weigh 50–69 kg, which is the Over 40 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 4 tablets/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Newfoundland?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 4 tablets/day one bottle lasts 30 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
How do I weigh a Newfoundland?
A dog this size is hard to weigh at home, so ask your vet practice whether you can use their walk-on scales between appointments. Weighing every few months keeps the feeding guide matched to your dog. Speak to your vet about any weight change you cannot explain.
Is it easier to crush several tablets into a Newfoundland’s food?
It can be. The label allows the tablets to be eaten directly or crushed into food, and with a larger daily count, mixing them into the meal saves time. Check the bowl afterwards so you know the whole portion was eaten. If your dog goes off food, speak to your vet.
Can every Newfoundland have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Newfoundland is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
