Samoyed: weight, routine and daily dose
The Samoyed was developed in the Arctic regions of north-eastern Siberia to help the nomadic Samoyede and Nentsy peoples, and the Royal Kennel Club stresses how versatile those dogs had to be: herding and guarding reindeer, pulling loads and even hunting. Their double coat insulated them against the climate, and their flat feet — likened to snow shoes, with thick hair between the pads — stopped snowballs building up.
One of the dogs used to establish the breed in the UK, Antarctic Buck, was a survivor of Carsten Borchgrevink’s expedition who had been discovered in Sydney Zoo. Today’s Samoyed keeps the stamina of a working dog: the RKC suggests more than two hours of exercise a day, plus daily grooming. Both shape the routine — meals placed after exercise once your dog has settled, and a daily groom that doubles as a check on body condition under that thick coat.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a Samoyed need?
A typical adult Samoyed weighs 15.5–29.5 kg, which crosses 2 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
| 25–40 kg | 3 tablets/day | 40 days | Every 4 weeks |
The bottle label prints 25 kg in two rows (11–25 kg and 25–40 kg). We use the 11–25 kg row at exactly 25 kg; if your dog is heavier than 25 kg, use the 25–40 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for Samoyed owners
- A thick double coat can hide weight gain or loss. Feel for the ribs and waist during the daily groom, and use scales for a real figure.
- The PDSA advises avoiding vigorous exercise around meal times, so feed after the main walk once your dog has cooled down.
- Two meals a day fit naturally around morning and evening exercise; give DIGEST+ with the same one each day.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Samoyed: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Samoyed have a day?
Typical adult Samoyeds weigh 15.5–29.5 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day; 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Samoyed?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days; At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
How do I check my Samoyed’s weight under all that coat?
Run your hands along the ribs, waist and spine during grooming, because the coat makes judging by eye unreliable. Weigh on scales every few months so the feeding guide stays matched to your dog. Speak to your vet about any weight change you cannot explain.
Can I split my Samoyed’s food into two meals?
Yes. Two meals a day fit well around morning and evening exercise, and the PDSA suggests several smaller meals rather than one big one for dogs that eat quickly. Give the supplement with the same meal each day. If your dog’s digestion changes, speak to your vet.
Can every Samoyed have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Samoyed is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
