Basset Hound: weight, routine and daily dose
The Basset Hound is French by origin but English by development. The Royal Kennel Club explains that hounds from Artois and Normandy were being imported into England by the 1860s, and that in the 1870s Everett Millais played a key role in shaping the modern breed, building on his imported hound, Model, and later the influence of Beagle and Bloodhound lines. The Basset Hound Club was founded in 1884, and Queen Alexandra kept Basset Hounds at Sandringham.
The breed was originally made for hunting small game on foot: low to the ground, with an excellent nose, long ears that help to retain scent and loose, elastic skin that protected it in dense undergrowth. The RKC suggests up to an hour of exercise a day. For a long, low, deep-bodied hound, the useful questions about the daily routine are less about how far it walks and more about how its meals are portioned and timed around those walks.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a Basset Hound need?
A typical adult Basset Hound weighs 18–29.5 kg, which crosses 2 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
| 25–40 kg | 3 tablets/day | 40 days | Every 4 weeks |
The bottle label prints 25 kg in two rows (11–25 kg and 25–40 kg). We use the 11–25 kg row at exactly 25 kg; if your dog is heavier than 25 kg, use the 25–40 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for Basset Hound owners
- Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine lists the Basset Hound among the large, deep-chested breeds in which GDV (bloat) is far more common. Its feeding suggestions include offering two or more meals a day, limiting activity after meals and avoiding raised food bowls.
- Walk first, then feed once your dog has settled, and keep the time after a meal quiet.
- A long, low build makes body shape hard to judge from above. Feel along the ribs and waist, and use scales for a real figure.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Basset Hound: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Basset Hound have a day?
Typical adult Basset Hounds weigh 18–29.5 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day; 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Basset Hound?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days; At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Should a Basset Hound eat one meal a day or two?
Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine suggests two or more meals a day for deep-chested breeds such as the Basset Hound. Give DIGEST+ with one of those meals at the same time each day. A swollen belly, or retching without bringing anything up, needs a vet immediately.
When should I walk my Basset Hound around mealtimes?
Walk first and feed once your dog has settled, then allow a quiet period after the meal; Cornell advises limiting activity after meals for deep-chested breeds. If your dog seems restless or uncomfortable after eating, contact your vet straight away.
Can every Basset Hound have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Basset Hound is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
