Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla: weight, routine and daily dose
The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is a planned breed with a precise starting point. The Royal Kennel Club explains that it is based on the Vizsla with an input of German Wirehaired Pointer blood: the first cross took place in 1904, and the two puppies it produced became the foundation stock.
Compared with the smooth Vizsla, the RKC describes the wirehaired dogs as slightly bigger and stronger in bone, with a protective wire coat that makes them well suited to hunting in cold conditions or rough cover. It suggests more than two hours of exercise a day, so this is a dog whose meals have to fit around a great deal of time outdoors, often in poor weather — with the main meal kept for after the day’s big outing.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla need?
A typical adult Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla weighs 20–29.5 kg, which crosses 2 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
| 25–40 kg | 3 tablets/day | 40 days | Every 4 weeks |
The bottle label prints 25 kg in two rows (11–25 kg and 25–40 kg). We use the 11–25 kg row at exactly 25 kg; if your dog is heavier than 25 kg, use the 25–40 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla owners
- After a cold or wet outing, dry your dog off and let them settle before putting food down.
- The PDSA advises avoiding vigorous exercise around meal times. With two or more hours of exercise a day, two meals spaced around the walks are easier to arrange than one large one.
- Working and quieter seasons can change your dog’s shape. Check weight whenever the routine changes, and talk to your vet before making big changes to food amounts.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla have a day?
Typical adult Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas weigh 20–29.5 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day; 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days; At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Should a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla have its supplement in the morning or the evening?
Either works. Choose the meal your dog eats at the most regular time and in the calmest state, which on long field days is often the evening meal. What matters most is giving it at the same meal each day. Speak to your vet if your dog’s digestion changes.
How should I change my Wirehaired Vizsla’s food between seasons?
Change gradually over several days, mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the old. Introduce a new supplement separately from a food change, so you can tell how your dog is getting on with each. If loose stools or vomiting carry on, speak to your vet.
Can every Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
