Standard Poodle: weight, routine and daily dose
The Poodle originates in Germany, where it was bred as a water retriever for duck hunters. The Royal Kennel Club points out that the famous trim began as a practical one: the hindquarters were clipped to help the dog swim, while bands of hair were left on the joints and the tip of the tail for protection from the cold.
The Kennel Club recognises three varieties, differentiated by size and sharing one standard; the Standard is the largest, at over 38 cm. The breed standard describes an elegant dog with a very proud carriage, gay-spirited and good-tempered, with a coat that does not moult. Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center names Standard Poodles among the large, deep-chested breeds in which bloat (GDV) is far more common, which is worth bearing in mind when you plan meals and exercise.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a Standard Poodle need?
A typical adult Standard Poodle weighs 18–32 kg, which crosses 2 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.

|---|---|---|---|
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |

The bottle label prints 25 kg in two rows (11–25 kg and 25–40 kg). We use the 11–25 kg row at exactly 25 kg; if your dog is heavier than 25 kg, use the 25–40 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for Standard Poodle owners
- Cornell’s feeding suggestions for at-risk breeds include offering two or more meals a day and limiting activity after meals — an easy pattern to build into a Standard Poodle’s day.
- Feed from a bowl on the floor rather than a raised stand; both the PDSA and Cornell advise against raised bowls.
- If your Poodle gulps food, the PDSA suggests a slow-feeding bowl to slow things down.
- The three Poodle varieties differ greatly in size, and the feeding guide works on your own dog’s weight, so weigh rather than estimate.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Standard Poodle: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Standard Poodle have a day?
Typical adult Standard Poodles weigh 18–32 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day; 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Standard Poodle?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days; At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Is the Standard Poodle a deep-chested breed?
Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center names Standard Poodles among the large, deep-chested breeds in which bloat (GDV) is more common. GDV is an emergency: if your dog’s belly swells or they retch without bringing anything up, call your vet immediately. Two or more meals a day and limited activity after meals are among Cornell’s feeding suggestions.
When is the best time to give the tablet to a Standard Poodle?
With one of the day’s regular meals, eaten directly or crushed into food. For a large, deep-chested dog, keep the time after that meal calm rather than heading straight out for vigorous exercise. Fresh drinking water should always be available.
Can every Standard Poodle have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Standard Poodle is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
