German Shorthaired Pointer: weight, routine and daily dose
The German Shorthaired Pointer belongs to the HPR breeds — hunt, point, retrieve — and the Royal Kennel Club calls it perhaps the most popular of them: excellent on point, a soft-mouthed retriever and thorough in its search for game. Its ancestors include the Spanish Pointer, German bird dogs and an infusion of English Pointer for speed, and the breed standard describes a dual-purpose dog that is equally good on land and water.
That build comes with a working dog’s need for activity. The RKC suggests more than two hours of exercise a day, and the standard pairs an alert, energetic dog with a gentle, affectionate and biddable temperament. A GSP’s day tends to be organised around long outings, so it helps to plan meals around those outings rather than squeezing food in between them.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a German Shorthaired Pointer need?
A typical adult German Shorthaired Pointer weighs 20–32 kg, which crosses 2 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
| 25–40 kg | 3 tablets/day | 40 days | Every 4 weeks |
The bottle label prints 25 kg in two rows (11–25 kg and 25–40 kg). We use the 11–25 kg row at exactly 25 kg; if your dog is heavier than 25 kg, use the 25–40 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for German Shorthaired Pointer owners
- With more than two hours of exercise a day suggested, set meals at fixed times that sit apart from the longest run — feed once your dog has come home and settled, not just before you head out.
- Two measured meals a day keep portions moderate for a large, keen dog and give you two natural points in the day for anything you add to the bowl.
- Activity can change a lot between busy and quieter months. Check body condition by hand as well as on the scales, and ask your vet to look at condition at routine visits.
- Keep fresh water available after exercise, and let a warm, panting dog cool down before the next meal.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

German Shorthaired Pointer: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a German Shorthaired Pointer have a day?
Typical adult German Shorthaired Pointers weigh 20–32 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day; 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a German Shorthaired Pointer?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days; At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
When should I feed my German Shorthaired Pointer around exercise?
Most owners feed once the dog has cooled down after a walk or run, rather than right before one. A settled dog eats more calmly, and a regular timetable makes the day predictable. If your GSP’s appetite or stools change noticeably, speak to your vet.
Can I give DIGEST+ on a busy training or shooting day?
Yes. It simply goes with the usual meal and can be eaten directly or crushed into food. Keeping it on the same meal each day matters more than how active the day is. Make sure fresh drinking water is always available, especially on long days out.
Can every German Shorthaired Pointer have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your German Shorthaired Pointer is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
