Scottish Terrier: weight, routine and daily dose
In its early days the Scottish Terrier was known as the Aberdeen terrier, because so many were found in that area. The Royal Kennel Club records that it took the name Scottish Terrier in 1879, and that the first breed club was formed and the standard drawn up in 1882. Like the other native Scottish breeds it shares its origins with, it was bred to go to ground after fox, badger and other vermin.
The RKC describes the Scottie as remarkably substantial and well boned for its size — a ‘multum in parvo’ breed — with great character and an independence that can stretch to stubbornness. The RKC suggests up to an hour of exercise a day. A dog with a mind of its own does best with a routine it can predict: the same mealtimes, the same order of events, and a tablet offered in whichever way it accepts.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a Scottish Terrier need?
A typical adult Scottish Terrier weighs 8.5–10.5 kg, which crosses 2 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 kg | 1 tablet/day | 120 days | Every 12 weeks |
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
The label goes from “up to 10 kg” to “11–25 kg”. A dog over 10 kg is no longer in the first band, so we use the 11–25 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for Scottish Terrier owners
- The breed standard range of 8.5–10.5 kg straddles the 10 kg point where the feeding guide changes, so weigh your own dog to see which band applies.
- An independent dog may turn down a tablet offered on its own. Crushing it into a small portion of food is an equally valid way to give it, according to the label.
- Daily grooming is a natural moment to feel for changes in body condition under the coat.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Scottish Terrier: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Scottish Terrier have a day?
Typical adult Scottish Terriers weigh 8.5–10.5 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: Up to 10 kg: 1 tablet/day; 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Scottish Terrier?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days; At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
My Scottish Terrier refuses tablets. What can I do?
Try crushing the tablet and mixing it into a small amount of your dog’s usual food, offered before the rest of the meal. Keeping to the same time and the same bowl each day helps a dog that likes routine. If your dog goes off food generally, speak to your vet.
Why does my Scottie’s exact weight matter for the feeding guide?
The breed standard range of 8.5–10.5 kg crosses the 10 kg point where the feeding guide changes, so two Scotties can fall into different bands. Weighing your dog every few months keeps the routine matched to the dog you actually have. Speak to your vet about any weight change you cannot explain.
Can every Scottish Terrier have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Scottish Terrier is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
