Dachshund: weight, routine and daily dose
Known in its native Germany as the Teckel, or badger dog, the Dachshund was bred to go to ground after badger and rabbit, and the Royal Kennel Club notes it is still used for tracking wounded game such as deer. Its low build, very strong forequarters and excellent nose are all part of that job, and the breed standard describes a dog that is intelligent, lively and courageous to the point of rashness.
In the UK the breed comes in two sizes and three coats — Smooth, Long and Wire Haired — and all six varieties share one standard. This page covers the standard size, with an ideal weight of 9–12 kg; miniatures are preferably under 5 kg, so they sit in a lighter band. The RKC suggests up to an hour’s exercise a day, which leaves the rest of a Dachshund’s routine to be built around regular meals and company.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a Dachshund need?
A typical adult Dachshund weighs 9–12 kg, which crosses 2 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 kg | 1 tablet/day | 120 days | Every 12 weeks |
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
The label goes from “up to 10 kg” to “11–25 kg”. A dog over 10 kg is no longer in the first band, so we use the 11–25 kg row.
How long DIGEST+ lasts for a Dachshund

| 2 tablets/day | 60 days | 120 days | 180 days | from £0.33 |
Days are for one dog. Each bottle holds 120 tablets; days are rounded down to whole days. Prices and cost per day by bottle count.
Feeding-routine notes for Dachshund owners
- A standard Dachshund’s ideal weight of 9–12 kg sits either side of the 10 kg line in the feeding guide, so weigh your own dog rather than assuming — a kilo either way changes which band applies.
- If you share your home with a miniature as well, weigh each dog separately: miniatures are preferably under 5 kg and usually sit in a different band.
- Measured meals at fixed times suit a compact dog; titbits add up quickly, so count them as part of the day’s food.
- For a dog that is suspicious of anything new in the bowl, crush the tablet into a small first portion of the meal and give the rest once that has gone.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Dachshund: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Dachshund have a day?
Typical adult Dachshunds weigh 9–12 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: Up to 10 kg: 1 tablet/day; 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Dachshund?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days; At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Does it matter whether my Dachshund is Smooth, Long or Wire Haired?
Not for the feeding guide. The three coat types share one breed standard, and the guide works by body weight. What matters is size: standard and miniature Dachshunds usually fall into different weight bands, so weigh your dog.
My Dachshund weighs close to 10 kg. Which band should I use?
Use your dog’s actual weight on the day you weigh them and follow the band it falls into on the feeding guide. If your dog sits right on the line, weigh again in a few weeks. Your vet can tell you whether that weight is right for your dog’s frame.
Can every Dachshund have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Dachshund is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
