Bichon Frise: weight, routine and daily dose
The word ‘Bichon’ means white dog, and ‘frise’ describes the soft corkscrew curls of the coat, the Royal Kennel Club explains. Although France was the breed’s country of development, the Bichon Frise is thought to have existed on the island of Tenerife as far back as the 14th century, and to have been taken to mainland Europe by traders.
There it found favour in the Royal Courts and the homes of the nobility, where it was often pampered and carried around in an ornamental basket. Today the RKC suggests up to 30 minutes of exercise a day and daily grooming, and notes that some of the Toy breeds can be finicky eaters. At around 5–8.5 kg, the Bichon’s routine is one of small regular meals, gradual changes, and a tablet tucked into food if it will not be taken whole.

Feeding-routine notes for Bichon Frise owners
- The daily groom is a good moment to feel for changes in body condition under the curly coat.
- Some Toy breeds can be finicky eaters, the Royal Kennel Club notes. Serve meals at set times and make changes gradually rather than offering a new food at every refusal.
- If a whole tablet is refused, crush it into a small amount of a food your dog already enjoys, then serve the rest of the meal.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Bichon Frise: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Bichon Frise have a day?
Typical adult Bichon Frises weigh 5–8.5 kg, which is the Up to 10 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 1 tablet/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Bichon Frise?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
My Bichon Frise is a fussy eater. Will that make a supplement harder to give?
It can, but crushing the tablet into a small portion of a familiar food usually gets round it, and the label allows the tablets to be crushed into food. Keep mealtimes regular and change one thing at a time. If your dog stops eating or loses weight, speak to your vet.
How do I weigh a Bichon Frise at home?
Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding your dog, and take the difference; a small dog can also be weighed in a basket on kitchen scales. Recheck every few months so the feeding guide matches your dog. Speak to your vet about any weight change you cannot explain.
Can every Bichon Frise have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Bichon Frise is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
