Lhasa Apso: weight, routine and daily dose
The Lhasa Apso was one of the first breeds kept as a companion. For centuries, the Royal Kennel Club notes, it lived with Tibetan monks in their isolated monasteries as companion and watchdog, and was believed to bring prosperity and fortune — hence its name, the Talisman Dog. It did not reach other countries until the late 19th century, and was shown with the Tibetan Terrier as a ‘Lhasa Terrier’ until the two breeds were divided in 1934.
The breed standard describes a well-balanced, sturdy, heavily coated dog that is gay and assertive — alert and steady, but somewhat aloof with strangers. The RKC suggests up to an hour’s exercise a day and daily grooming, and lists a lifespan of over 12 years, so a Lhasa’s routine is a long-running one of small meals, short walks and regular brushing.

Feeding-routine notes for Lhasa Apso owners
- For a small mouth, crushing the tablet into a little food is often simpler than offering it whole.
- The heavy coat makes weight changes hard to see; feel for the ribs at grooming time as well as using the scales.
- A watchful, assertive little dog may eat best somewhere calm, away from the household’s comings and goings.
- Keep extras small: on a small dog, treats are a large share of the day’s food.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.
