Cairn Terrier: weight, routine and daily dose
The Cairn is one of Scotland’s native breeds. The Royal Kennel Club notes that from the 17th century it was used in the Western Highlands and on the Isle of Skye to keep down vermin that threatened game, often working in small packs, and that it takes its name from the cairns — small outcrops of stones — common on the highland moors. It shares ancestry with the Skye, the Scottish Terrier and the West Highland White.
Remarkably unchanged over the centuries, the Cairn is lighter in build than the other Scottish terriers but described by the standard as active, game and hardy, with a fearless and gay disposition — assertive but not aggressive. With up to an hour’s exercise a day suggested and an ideal weight of 6–7.5 kg, it suits a routine of brisk walks and small, measured meals.

Feeding-routine notes for Cairn Terrier owners
- The standard puts the ideal at 6–7.5 kg, comfortably inside the lightest band of the feeding guide; weigh now and then to make sure that is still true of your dog.
- A puzzle feeder or scattering part of the meal gives a game, hardy terrier something to work at.
- Small dogs, small portions: keep treats small and count them in the daily total.
- Offer the tablet by hand as a reward after a walk, or crush it into food — whichever your Cairn prefers.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Cairn Terrier: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Cairn Terrier have a day?
Typical adult Cairn Terriers weigh 6–7.5 kg, which is the Up to 10 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 1 tablet/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Cairn Terrier?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Can I hide the tablet in a treat for my Cairn?
You can, though you may not need to: DIGEST+ tablets are chicken-flavoured and can be eaten directly or crushed into food. If you do wrap it in something, use a small amount and count it as part of the day’s food.
My Cairn Terrier weighs more than the breed standard. Does that matter?
The standard’s ideal is 6–7.5 kg, but the Royal Kennel Club notes that the standard is a guide and individual dogs may be larger or smaller. Use your dog’s actual weight with the feeding guide, and ask your vet whether your dog’s current weight is healthy for them.
Can every Cairn Terrier have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Cairn Terrier is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
