Pug: weight, routine and daily dose
The Pug’s story runs from China to the Netherlands: the Royal Kennel Club notes that traders from the Dutch East India Company are thought to have brought dogs of this type home in the 16th century, where they became popular at court, and William of Orange’s Pugs came with him when he took the English throne. The most substantial of the Toy breeds, it is summed up as ‘multum in parvo’ — a lot of dog in a small frame.
Pugs were bred purely as companions, and the RKC describes them as affectionate, sociable dogs that thrive on human company. Their exercise needs are modest, up to an hour a day, and the RKC notes that a flat-faced structure limits their tolerance for heat and strenuous activity — and that an under-stimulated Pug can be food-motivated to the point of overeating. Both points shape a sensible daily routine.

Feeding-routine notes for Pug owners
- The RKC notes that Pugs can be food-motivated to the point of overeating, so measure the daily food and count every extra — including training rewards — as part of it.
- A flat face can make picking up a whole tablet awkward. Crushing it and mixing it into a little of the meal is often simpler than offering it on its own.
- Keep exercise gentle in warm weather, as the RKC advises; walk in the cooler parts of the day and let your Pug settle and cool down before meals.
- Pugs thrive on company, so a routine built around when you are at home — meals and short walks at the same times each day — tends to suit them.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Pug: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Pug have a day?
Typical adult Pugs weigh 6.3–8.1 kg, which is the Up to 10 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 1 tablet/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Pug?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Should I crush the tablet for my Pug?
You can. DIGEST+ can be eaten directly or crushed into food, and many owners of flat-faced dogs find mixing a crushed tablet into a small portion of the meal easier than offering it whole. Make sure fresh drinking water is always available.
My Pug always seems hungry. Is that normal?
The Royal Kennel Club notes that Pugs can be food-motivated to the point of overeating, especially when under-stimulated. Weigh your Pug regularly and ask your vet what a healthy weight looks like for your dog. A sudden change in appetite is always a reason to speak to your vet.
Can every Pug have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Pug is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
