Wire Fox Terrier: weight, routine and daily dose
The Wire Fox Terrier’s story is bound up with its smooth-coated cousin. The Royal Kennel Club explains that the hunt terriers behind the Fox Terrier carried broken, wire and smooth coats, so early Fox Terriers of all three types were shown together, until the Wires were given their own classes in the 1870s. The Smooth was established first, but from the turn of the century the Wire grew so quickly that it overtook the Smooth as the most popular breed.
Post-war Britain saw many children learn to walk with the help of a toy Wire Fox Terrier on a wheeled frame, the RKC notes. The real dog is friendly, forthcoming and fearless, and the RKC suggests up to an hour of exercise a day. At around 7–8 kg it is a small, sturdy terrier with a simple routine to keep: regular meals, a daily walk, and a tablet given whole or crushed into food.

Feeding-routine notes for Wire Fox Terrier owners
- Adult Wire Fox Terriers usually sit in the smallest band of the feeding guide, but a dog carrying extra weight may not — one more reason to weigh rather than assume.
- Trimming or hand-stripping sessions are a good moment to feel for changes in body condition under the wiry coat.
- The chicken-flavour tablet can be offered from the hand after a walk or crushed into the next meal; use whichever your dog takes reliably.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Wire Fox Terrier: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Wire Fox Terrier have a day?
Typical adult Wire Fox Terriers weigh 6.5–8.5 kg, which is the Up to 10 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 1 tablet/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Wire Fox Terrier?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Can I hand my Wire Fox Terrier the tablet after a walk?
Yes. The label says the chicken-flavour tablets can be eaten directly, so offering one from the hand is fine. If your dog refuses it, crush it into food instead. Giving it at the same point in the day each time keeps the routine simple.
How often should I weigh my Wire Fox Terrier?
Every few months is a sensible rhythm for an adult dog, and more often if their routine or food changes. Bathroom scales work well: weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding your dog, and take the difference. Speak to your vet about any weight change you cannot explain.
Can every Wire Fox Terrier have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Wire Fox Terrier is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
