Havanese: weight, routine and daily dose
The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba, the Royal Kennel Club explains — a member of the Bichon family that is thought to have been taken from the Mediterranean to Cuba by Spanish or Italian traders. The breed became more widely known after the Communist regime took control of Cuba, when many people fled to the USA and took their dogs with them.
It shares the silky-textured coat of the other Bichon breeds but comes in a wide variety of colours. The RKC suggests up to 30 minutes of exercise a day and daily grooming, and places it among the Toy breeds — small companion dogs, some of which can be finicky eaters. At around 3–6 kg, a Havanese routine is a matter of small, regular meals and a tablet given in a way a small mouth finds easy.

Feeding-routine notes for Havanese owners
- For a small mouth, crush the tablet into a spoonful of food and offer that before the rest of the meal.
- The Royal Kennel Club notes that some Toy breeds can be finicky eaters. Regular mealtimes tend to help more than frequent changes of food.
- At 3–6 kg, kitchen or baby scales give a more useful reading than bathroom scales.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Havanese: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Havanese have a day?
Typical adult Havaneses weigh 3–6 kg, which is the Up to 10 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 1 tablet/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Havanese?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Can a Havanese take a whole tablet?
Some small dogs will take a tablet whole from the hand; others do better with it crushed into food. The label allows either, so use whichever your dog accepts reliably. If your dog struggles to swallow or seems unwell, speak to your vet.
My Havanese leaves food in the bowl. Should I keep changing foods?
Frequent changes make it harder to see what suits your dog. Keep meals at regular times and make any change gradually, one thing at a time. Weight loss, vomiting or diarrhoea are reasons to speak to your vet rather than to try another food.
Can every Havanese have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Havanese is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
