Miniature Dachshund: weight, routine and daily dose
In Germany the Dachshund is the Teckel, the badger dog, and it is still used there both to track wounded game such as deer and to go to ground after badger or rabbits. The breed standard explains the shape: a low build with very strong forequarters and forelegs that suits a dog working underground, plus an excellent nose and the perseverance of a true tracker. The Royal Kennel Club describes the temperament as intelligent, lively, obedient and courageous to the point of rashness.
In the UK the breed comes in two sizes, each in smooth, long and wire-haired coats, with miniatures preferably weighing under 5 kg; the standard gives an ideal of 4.5 kg, and the American Kennel Club defines the miniature as 11 pounds and under. Up to an hour of exercise a day keeps a small hound busy, and with such a light frame every extra snack counts — so measured meals and a simple, fixed routine matter.

Feeding-routine notes for Miniature Dachshund owners
- Miniature Dachshunds sit well inside the up to 10 kg band. Weighing still helps, because small gains are a large share of a small dog’s weight.
- A small mouth may find a whole tablet awkward; crushing it into a spoonful of the usual food is an easy alternative. See how to give a dog a tablet.
- Training rewards and titbits add up quickly for a dog this size, so count them as part of the day’s food.
- Change food gradually over several days, and speak to your vet about vomiting, diarrhoea or any change in appetite.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Miniature Dachshund: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Miniature Dachshund have a day?
Typical adult Miniature Dachshunds weigh 4.5–5 kg, which is the Up to 10 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 1 tablet/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Miniature Dachshund?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Is a Miniature Dachshund’s mouth too small for a tablet?
Many small dogs chew a tablet happily, but if yours spits it out you can crush it and mix it into a little wet food or the usual meal. Offering the mixed spoonful first, before the rest of the bowl, helps make sure it is all eaten.
Does coat type change a Miniature Dachshund’s routine?
Not for feeding. Smooth, long and wire-haired miniatures share the same breed standard and the same size, so their feeding routine is the same; the difference is mainly in grooming. Weigh your own dog and use that weight, whatever the coat.
Can every Miniature Dachshund have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Miniature Dachshund is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
