Norfolk Terrier: weight, routine and daily dose
Until 1964 there was officially no such thing as a Norfolk Terrier. The Royal Kennel Club explains that the Norwich Terrier, recognised in 1932, allowed two types of ear. Breeders later decided to regard the drop-eared and prick-eared dogs as separate breeds, and after a campaign that at times became quite heated, the drop-eared variety was recognised in 1964 as the Norfolk Terrier.
The RKC describes the Norfolk as one of the smallest of the terrier breeds, but with great substance for its size — alert and fearless, with a lovable disposition. It suggests up to an hour of exercise a day, and the breed is happy in a flat. That gives a compact, busy little dog of around 5 kg a straightforward day: a good walk, regular meals fitted after exercise rather than squeezed in before it, and a daily supplement tied to one of those meals.

Feeding-routine notes for Norfolk Terrier owners
- A whole tablet can be offered from the hand or crushed into food — the label allows either, so use whichever your dog takes reliably.
- Feed once a walk has finished and your dog has settled, rather than just before heading out.
- To weigh a dog this size at home, weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding your dog, and take the difference. Write the figure down so you can compare from one month to the next.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Norfolk Terrier: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Norfolk Terrier have a day?
Typical adult Norfolk Terriers weigh 4.5–5.5 kg, which is the Up to 10 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 1 tablet/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Norfolk Terrier?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Should I feed my Norfolk Terrier before or after a walk?
A calm meal after a walk, once your dog has settled, is an easy rhythm to keep. Giving DIGEST+ with that meal ties it to something that already happens every day. If your dog regularly seems uncomfortable after eating, speak to your vet.
How do I weigh a small terrier at home?
Weigh yourself on bathroom scales, then weigh yourself again holding your dog, and take the difference. Doing this every few months keeps the feeding guide matched to your dog’s actual weight. A sudden, unexplained change in weight is worth discussing with your vet.
Can every Norfolk Terrier have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Norfolk Terrier is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
