Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois): weight, routine and daily dose
Sheepdogs of the Belgian Shepherd type date back in Belgium to the Middle Ages, and the Royal Kennel Club explains that the breed exists in four varieties that share the same physical attributes and differ only in coat and colour. The Malinois is the short-coated variety, with a dense coat in the same colours as the Tervueren. In 1891 the first breed club was formed, and Professor Adolphe Reul of the Belgian veterinary school examined 117 dogs and classified the varieties, naming them after the areas of Belgium where they originated.
Agile, fast and lightly built yet robust, these are excellent herding dogs, and the RKC notes that the breed has also shown its versatility as a service dog, widely used by the police and armed forces. It describes them as watchful, wary and highly intelligent, with an appetite for work, and suggests more than two hours of exercise a day. For a dog with that much drive, a predictable structure — work or exercise, a cool-down, then food — helps the whole routine hold together.

Feeding-routine notes for Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois) owners
- The PDSA advises avoiding vigorous exercise around meal times. With a high-drive dog, build a deliberate cool-down into the day before the bowl goes down.
- Malinois weights vary widely between males and females and cross the 25 kg point in the feeding guide, so weigh your own dog.
- If food rewards are part of training, count them in the day’s total so main meals can be adjusted.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.
