Pointer: weight, routine and daily dose
The Royal Kennel Club calls the Pointer the supreme scenting machine — a breed still fit for its original job of ranging over large expanses of land to find the scent of game, then halting, frozen in a ‘point’, in the direction of the sitting game. Its slightly concave muzzle lifts the nose to help it scent, and it hunts with its head held high, lashing its bee-sting tail.
In the 18th and 19th centuries the Pointer was much in demand among the gentry as the most stylish of gundogs. It is an athlete, and the RKC suggests more than two hours of exercise a day, while the short coat needs only weekly grooming. Most of a Pointer’s day is spent on the move, which makes the timing of meals around that exercise the part of the routine most worth planning.

How many DIGEST+ tablets does a Pointer need?
A typical adult Pointer weighs 20–34.5 kg, which crosses 2 rows of the DIGEST+ feeding guide. Weigh your own dog and use the row for its current weight — the table shows each case.
| Your dog’s weight | Tablets per day | One bottle lasts | Suggested refill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11–25 kg | 2 tablets/day | 60 days | Every 6 weeks |
| 25–40 kg | 3 tablets/day | 40 days | Every 4 weeks |
The bottle label prints 25 kg in two rows (11–25 kg and 25–40 kg). We use the 11–25 kg row at exactly 25 kg; if your dog is heavier than 25 kg, use the 25–40 kg row.

Feeding-routine notes for Pointer owners
- Feed once your dog has cooled down after running, and give a meal time to settle before the next hard session.
- If your Pointer gulps its food, the PDSA suggests slowing dogs down with a slow-feeding bowl and feeding several smaller meals rather than one big one.
- A short coat makes changes in body shape easier to see, but scales are still the reliable check for a dog whose weight the feeding guide depends on.
- Keep water readily available — carry some on long outings and keep a bowl down at home.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Pointer: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Pointer have a day?
Typical adult Pointers weigh 20–34.5 kg, which crosses more than one row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 11–25 kg: 2 tablets/day; 25–40 kg: 3 tablets/day. Weigh your dog and use the row for its current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Pointer?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days; At 3 tablets/day one bottle lasts 40 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
How do I fit a daily tablet into a Pointer’s exercise-heavy day?
Tie it to the meal that follows the main exercise session, once your dog has settled. The tablet can be eaten directly or crushed into food, so it adds no extra step to the day. If your dog seems uncomfortable after meals, speak to your vet.
My Pointer bolts its food after a run. What can help?
Let your dog settle before feeding, and try a slow-feeding bowl or several smaller meals; the PDSA suggests both for dogs that eat very quickly. Feeding from the floor rather than a raised bowl is also what the PDSA now advises. If your dog is often sick after eating, speak to your vet.
Can every Pointer have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Pointer is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
