Chihuahua: weight, routine and daily dose
The Royal Kennel Club calls the Chihuahua the smallest breed in the world. It takes its name from the Mexican state where it became fashionable in the late 19th century, and from there its popularity spread to America, helped along by celebrity and film-star owners. The breed comes in two varieties, Smooth Coat and Long Coat, which share the same physical attributes apart from the coat.
Bold and saucy in temperament, with what the Royal Kennel Club calls a huge personality in a tiny frame, the Chihuahua is described in the standard as an alert little dog, swift-moving and gay, spirited and intelligent. Up to 30 minutes of exercise a day is suggested, so most of a Chihuahua’s day is spent close to its people — which makes small, precise meals the centre of its routine.

Feeding-routine notes for Chihuahua owners
- At 1.8–2.7 kg, Chihuahuas are in the up to 10 kg band. A kitchen or baby scale gives a more accurate reading than bathroom scales — see how to weigh your dog.
- For a tiny mouth, crushing a tablet into a spoonful of the usual food is usually easier than giving it whole.
- Even one or two titbits are a large share of a Chihuahua’s daily food, so keep extras very small.
- Make food changes gradually, and speak to your vet promptly about vomiting, diarrhoea or a dog that stops eating.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Chihuahua: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Chihuahua have a day?
Typical adult Chihuahuas weigh 1.8–2.7 kg, which is the Up to 10 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 1 tablet/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Chihuahua?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Is a Chihuahua’s mouth too small for a tablet?
It can be. Crushing the tablet and mixing it into a little of the usual food is the simplest approach. Offer that spoonful first, then the rest of the meal, so you can see it has been eaten.
Does a Long Coat Chihuahua need a different routine from a Smooth Coat?
Not for feeding. The two varieties share the same size and build, so their feeding routine is the same; the difference is mainly in grooming. Go by your own dog’s weight on the scales.
Can every Chihuahua have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Chihuahua is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
