Yorkshire Terrier: weight, routine and daily dose
The Yorkshire Terrier started out as a working man’s dog. The Royal Kennel Club traces the breed to the old working Black and Tan Terrier, with Maltese and Skye Terrier blood added, and to the terriers that Scottish labourers brought with them when they travelled to work in the mines and cotton mills of Yorkshire. A dog called Huddersfield Ben, born in 1865, is credited as the foundation of the breed.
The Yorkie soon became a favourite house pet, but the RKC notes that he still keeps features of his terrier background. Everything about his day is small in scale: the breed standard sets weight at up to 3.2 kg and the RKC suggests up to 30 minutes of exercise a day. With a dog this size, routine is about small, regular amounts — modest meals at set times, new foods introduced a little at a time, and a tablet that may be easier to give crushed into food than whole.

Feeding-routine notes for Yorkshire Terrier owners
- With a very small mouth, a crushed tablet mixed into a spoonful of the usual food is often easier than a whole one. Offer that spoonful first, then the rest of the meal, so you know it has all been eaten.
- The Royal Kennel Club notes that some Toy breeds can be finicky eaters. Keep mealtimes regular and add anything new in small amounts, rather than switching between toppers from day to day.
- For a dog of around 2–3 kg, a change of a few hundred grams is a large share of body weight. Kitchen or baby scales give a clearer reading than guessing, and any sudden change is worth mentioning to your vet.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Yorkshire Terrier: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Yorkshire Terrier have a day?
Typical adult Yorkshire Terriers weigh 1.5–3.2 kg, which is the Up to 10 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 1 tablet/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Yorkshire Terrier?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 1 tablet/day one bottle lasts 120 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Can I crush a DIGEST+ tablet for my Yorkshire Terrier?
Yes. The label says the tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food, which can be easier for a very small mouth. Mix the crushed tablet into a small amount of the usual meal so that it is all eaten. If your Yorkie seems unwell or stops eating, speak to your vet.
My Yorkshire Terrier is a fussy eater. How should I introduce something new?
Introduce one new thing at a time, in a small amount, mixed into food your dog already accepts. The Royal Kennel Club notes that some Toy breeds can be finicky eaters, so patience and a regular mealtime help. A sudden loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhoea is a reason to speak to your vet rather than to keep changing food.
Can every Yorkshire Terrier have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Yorkshire Terrier is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
