Cocker Spaniel: weight, routine and daily dose
The Cocker Spaniel takes its name from its first job: hunting woodcock. Until 1893, when it was recognised as a separate variety, all the so-called Land Spaniels were bred together and only later sorted by size and colour — and the Royal Kennel Club notes that a Cocker was once simply required to weigh under 25 lbs. The breed standard still describes the typical bustling movement of a dog following scent, fearless of heavy cover.
Its nickname, “the merry cocker”, comes from the ever-wagging tail, and the standard sums up the temperament as gentle and affectionate, yet full of life and exuberance. The Royal Kennel Club suggests up to an hour of exercise a day and daily grooming, so a Cocker’s routine has a few fixed points — a walk with plenty of sniffing, a brush, and meals at steady times — that are easy to build a daily supplement around.

Feeding-routine notes for Cocker Spaniel owners
- At around 13–14.5 kg, most adult Cockers fall in the 11–25 kg band, but weigh your own dog — individuals vary, and the band follows the scale, not the breed.
- Daily grooming is a natural moment in a Cocker’s day; some owners pair it with the morning meal and supplement so all three become one habit.
- A busy, scent-led dog can be distracted at mealtimes. Feeding in a quiet spot helps you see that the whole portion, and any crushed tablet, has actually been eaten.
- Introduce any new food or supplement gradually, and speak to your vet about vomiting, diarrhoea or a change in appetite rather than changing several things at once.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Cocker Spaniel: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Cocker Spaniel have a day?
Typical adult Cocker Spaniels weigh 13–14.5 kg, which is the 11–25 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 2 tablets/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Cocker Spaniel?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Is a Cocker Spaniel’s mouth big enough for a whole tablet?
A dog of a Cocker’s size usually manages a chewable tablet without trouble, and many take it from the hand like a small snack. If yours is fussy, the tablet can be crushed and mixed into a little of the usual food instead.
Should a Cocker that works in the field have a different routine?
The supplement routine itself does not need to change: giving it at the same meal every day is the simplest approach. What can change on busy days is how much food and water your dog needs, so keep fresh water available and speak to your vet if you are unsure how to adjust portions for a very active dog.
Can every Cocker Spaniel have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Cocker Spaniel is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
