Whippet: weight, routine and daily dose
Whippet-type dogs were common in the Middle Ages, and the Royal Kennel Club notes that 21st-century genetic studies trace the breed to the Greyhound. By the 19th century the Whippet was a recognisable breed, used to hunt small game and vermin — a pursuit the Victorians turned into a gambling sport — and Whippet racing became popular in the mining areas of the North and Wales as well as in London and the Midlands. Early standards called it “a Greyhound in miniature”.
Today the breed is better known in the show ring and at home, where the standard calls it an ideal companion, highly adaptable in domestic and sporting surroundings, with a gentle, affectionate, even disposition. The Royal Kennel Club suggests up to an hour of exercise a day and says the Whippet enjoys the comforts of domestic life — a day that mixes a good run with long, comfortable rests, and meals at the same times.

Feeding-routine notes for Whippet owners
- A typical range of about 11–18.5 kg puts most adult Whippets in the 11–25 kg band. The scales are more reliable than judging by eye.
- If your Whippet tends to eat slowly or leave food, mixing a crushed tablet into a small first portion helps make sure it is eaten.
- Many owners let a sighthound settle after its meal rather than heading straight out for a run.
- Keep food changes gradual, and speak to your vet about any vomiting, diarrhoea or change in appetite.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Whippet: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Whippet have a day?
Typical adult Whippets weigh 11–18.5 kg, which is the 11–25 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 2 tablets/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Whippet?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Should I give my Whippet’s supplement before a run?
There is no need to time it around exercise. Giving it with a regular meal keeps it consistent, and letting your dog rest after eating before a fast run is a calm habit many owners keep.
My Whippet is a fussy eater — how can I give a tablet?
Try offering it from the hand first, as many dogs take a flavoured chewable like a snack. If that does not work, crush it into a spoonful of something your dog already enjoys from its usual food. If a change in appetite lasts or worries you, speak to your vet.
Can every Whippet have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Whippet is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
