Staffordshire Bull Terrier: weight, routine and daily dose
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was developed in the Black Country of Staffordshire and the northern parts of Birmingham, sharing its ancestry with the Bull Terrier that James Hinks created in the 1860s by crossing Bulldogs with terriers. When the Bull Terrier’s head shape changed, devotees of the original cross stayed loyal to it, and that type became the modern Staffie — recognised by The Kennel Club only in the 1930s, and still traditionally shown in a broad leather collar bearing the brass Staffordshire Knot.
Its rough-and-ready beginnings belie its reputation at home: the breed standard calls it highly intelligent and affectionate, especially with children, and bold, fearless and totally reliable. The Royal Kennel Club suggests up to an hour of exercise a day, so a Staffie’s routine is usually a couple of energetic outings and plenty of time with its people — with meals at steady times holding the day together.

Feeding-routine notes for Staffordshire Bull Terrier owners
- The breed standard’s 11–17 kg puts most adult Staffies in the 11–25 kg band. Weigh your own dog rather than guessing, and check the dose calculator.
- If your Staffie is a keen eater, crushing a tablet into a small first portion of food, then adding the rest, is a simple way to make sure it goes down.
- Count training rewards as part of the day’s food so your dog keeps a steady weight.
- Make food changes gradually over several days, and speak to your vet about any vomiting, diarrhoea or change in appetite.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Staffordshire Bull Terrier have a day?
Typical adult Staffordshire Bull Terriers weigh 11–17 kg, which is the 11–25 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 2 tablets/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
Will my Staffordshire Bull Terrier take a tablet from the hand?
Many dogs take a chewable, flavoured tablet like a small snack. If yours is suspicious, crush it into a little of the usual food. Either way, give it at the same meal each day so it becomes routine.
Should a Staffie’s supplement fit around exercise?
It does not need to. Linking it to a regular meal is the easiest approach, and many owners prefer to let a dog settle after eating before an energetic game. Always have fresh drinking water available.
Can every Staffordshire Bull Terrier have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Staffordshire Bull Terrier is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
