Lagotto Romagnolo: weight, routine and daily dose
The Lagotto Romagnolo’s name explains its first job. The Royal Kennel Club notes that ‘Lagotto’ is an Italian dialect word for a curly-coated duck retriever, and that the breed was developed in the Romagna district of northern Italy, a landscape of expansive marshes. When the marshes were reclaimed and drained in the early 20th century, the ducks left and there was less demand for a retriever.
Instead, the Lagotto’s acute scenting powers were put to work finding truffles, which the RKC says is now its primary use in its native land. Recognised by the Italian Kennel Club in 1991, it is a relative newcomer to the UK, where it has shown its retrieving skills in gundog working tests. The RKC suggests more than two hours of exercise a day for this small-to-medium dog, so a Lagotto’s day is built around time spent nose-down outdoors, with meals fitted after the main outing.

Feeding-routine notes for Lagotto Romagnolo owners
- The breed standard puts adult Lagotti at 11–16 kg, which falls within a single band of the feeding guide; weigh your own dog to confirm where they sit.
- With more than two hours of exercise a day, feed after the main outing once your dog has settled. The PDSA advises avoiding vigorous exercise around meal times.
- Regular grooming of the curly coat is a good moment to feel for changes in body condition.
- Give DIGEST+ at the same point in the day — with breakfast or dinner — so it becomes part of the routine. The tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food.
- Weigh your dog every few months: the dose follows body weight, not breed.
- Introduce one new thing at a time. If you are also changing food, let that settle first so you know what is what.

Lagotto Romagnolo: common questions
How many DIGEST+ tablets should a Lagotto Romagnolo have a day?
Typical adult Lagotto Romagnolos weigh 11–16 kg, which is the 11–25 kg row of the DIGEST+ feeding guide: 2 tablets/day. Always use your own dog’s current weight.
How long does one bottle of DIGEST+ last for a Lagotto Romagnolo?
Each bottle holds 120 tablets. At 2 tablets/day one bottle lasts 60 days. Days are for one dog and rounded down.
When should I feed my Lagotto Romagnolo on a day of long walks or scent work?
Feed after the main session, once your dog has cooled down and settled, and leave a gap after meals before vigorous activity. Giving DIGEST+ with that same meal each day keeps it simple. Speak to your vet if your dog is regularly unsettled after eating.
Can I crush a tablet into my Lagotto’s food?
Yes. The label says the tablets can be eaten directly or crushed into food. Mixing the crushed tablet into a small first portion of the meal helps make sure it is all eaten. If your dog refuses food altogether, speak to your vet.
Can every Lagotto Romagnolo have DIGEST+?
DIGEST+ is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs and is not suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. If your Lagotto Romagnolo is under veterinary supervision, ask your vet before starting.
